Speedo Meet Info

VOLUNTEER!

The Speedo meet is coming up, and we need volunteers throughout the day (7:00 AM to 9:30 PM) from Wednesday, July 22 through Saturday, July 25.  It will be critical that everyone volunteer to help this meet be successful.  Volunteering is not only part of being Twin and supporting the club, but it is the payment Minnetonka Swim Club is making for long course pool practice time this summer.

We need volunteers in all positions, and have created a page for you to view position descriptions. To view the page, click on the Speedo Meet Info button at left.  To sign up, send an e-mail to sandra.hibbard@comcast.net.

This week's Speedo tip of the week comes from MIKE MEJIA, M.S., C.S.C.S.//Special Correspondent.

Strength and Conditioning: Unilateral Training

Unilateral training (working one limb at a time) causes more muscle involvement because of something known as the bilateral deficit. Simply, this means that the total weight you can lift with
each limb working independently is greater than two limbs working together! Here are some great ideas for incorporating more unilateral training into your workouts:

  • Try doing some form of single leg squat, or lunging movements at least once per week.
     
  • One arms rows, performed either with dumbbells or resistance bands, are a great way to strengthen the upper back and shoulders.
     
  • Using your other arm to help hold the ball in position, try some one-armed medicine ball throws to a partner as a means of increasing explosive strength and power.

A request sent to the suggestion box this week asked if we couldn't keep Speedo tips on the Web site. Since we "borrow" them from USA Swimming, you can click here to go directly to the USA Swimming archive of Speedo Tips, and search for what you want.  It's very handy and has a LOT of good information!

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday will be normal practice days.  Saturday will be available to work on specific techniques, such as flip-turns or learning to swim a certain stroke.  We strongly encourage people who are new to swimming to attend these days, but all are invited.

Lost & Found

Has your swimmer left something at school? 

Please know that generally lost things get put in the basket in the office at MMW under the lockers.  Because the items in the lost and found could be from swim club, lessons, school, and anything else that goes on in the pool, it's best that you check in the office yourself when something has been lost.

Please also note that many things never get turned in...  so have your swimmer ask others in the practice group if anyone accidentally picked up his/her clothing or equipment.
